Mark Twain
Directed by Ken Burns. Samuel L. Clemens's life and work, and their importance to American civilization, are recounted in this sweeping 2002 documentary. From the Mississippi shores of Hannibal, Missouri, to the silver and gold mines of Nevada and California, the stately home in Hartford, Connecticut, and multiple trips abroad, Twain is seen as a developing writer and celebrity, whose humor is his way of dealing with a cruel and lonely world. Experts comment on the enduring value of his work, especially Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (which is described as an antiracist masterpiece despite the controversy over Twain's use of an infamous six-letter racial epithet). DVD features: documentary on the making of Mark Twain, interviews with Hal Holbrook, Arthur Miller and others, Twain quotes and photos, conversation with Ken Burns. The 270-page companion book is lavishly illustrated with stills used in the film. Grades 7-12. PBS. 220 minutes.
